Key Caps replacement apps for OS X?
I remember using the Key Caps app in OS 9 alot. I can't seem to find it's equivalent in OS X. Does anyone have any alternatives?
I have a little dashboard widget callled CharacterPal that gives me basic symbols, but it's not robust enough in terms of fonts it can handle.

If you have the american or canadian flag in your top right by the volume and date, click that, then click keyboard viewer. If its not there, go to system prefs, then international, then click the input tab, in there make sure character palette is checked and keyboard viewer is checked. That should be what your looking for.

If you don't want to have the keyboard menu displayed, and already have the AppleScript menu enabled (/Applications/AppleScript/AppleScript Utility --> Show Script Menu in menu bar), paste this script into Script Editor, save it as a script in ~/Library/Scripts (in your home folder), and any time you want the Keyboard Viewer, just select the script from the AppleScript menu.
Alternatively, save it as an Application instead of a script, and you can access it from your Dock or anywhere else you can put an application.
Cheers!

If you want the application itself; it was part of Jaguar and I have successfully transferred that version to Tiger on a powerbook running 10.4.4.

madgunde, I saved the script and I've also made it an application. However, it doesn't show up as an application in the dock. Nor can I quit or close it using apple key commands. I end up closing out other windows!
Any way to make it behave like any other application?

Not without some serious programming! The thing is, it's not an application in and of itself. The script quits once it's done it's thing, so all you have to do it close the Keyboard Viewer when you're done with it. Because Keyboard Viewer is implemented as an inspector window, the normal quit and close window shortcuts don't affect it.

In most text editing programs for OS X (even the 'Finder'), under the 'Edit' pull-down menu, at the bottom of the list is 'Special Characters...'. Is that what you're looking for?
